The Venice of the North

NUIT BLANCHE GUESTHOUSE - Bruges, BELGIUM

Bruges is known to be like a fairytale, so if you’re looking for something a little more whimsical when travelling, this is the European city for you.

I stayed in a medieval guesthouse called Nuit Blanche, which was an echo of the past and gave a true sense of the city’s heritage. The guesthouse is owned by artist David De Graef whose surreal paintings adorn the ground level of the house, and over the years has hosted guests such as Winston Churchill and the current King and Queen of Belgium. Our room looked over the cathedral and gothic garden, which immediately lead onto a canal full of swans and boats. Our host David was wonderful, so be sure to ask him for advice on where to eat, drink and explore. He’s full of fun facts and countless stories about the history of the building and Bruges – who needs a tour-guide? Did I mention he’s got mad cooking skills? Be sure to fill up on his exceptional 3 course breakfast before you head out for the day.

And don’t forget, Belgium is one of the best places in the world for a beer lover, producing over 1000 different varieties of beer. It’s home to the famous wall of beer which has all of the country’s varieties out on display. Santé!
